ATHELHAMPTON HOUSE

It’s a fortnight since our Bakelite handles were fitted to the interior doors and have the doors been painted yet?  Like hell!  I expect another 3 years will need to pass before we get off our lazy asses to pick up a paint-brush.  It’s definitely looking like another job for Rated People as our rating is about 0 out of 10.

Instead we’ve squandered the much needed door decorating time swanning around the Dorset countryside photographing plants and filling our faces with cream tea.  (So much better than painting doors!)

Quietly nestling behind the Dorchester by-pass is the beautiful Athelhampton House.

This 15th Century house has a lovely collection of old furnished rooms and extensive gardens to potter about in, the most famous being The Great Court with its huge pyramid shaped yew trees.

Here’s what I saw whilst wandering round the Athelhampton gardens:

Queen Victoria was not amused as we trampled around her shrubbery taking photos of all the flowers like 5 year olds who'd overdosed on a big bag of highly colourful jelly beans.

The cottage style garden was full of many familiar faces which when viewed close up took on a whole new perspective.

The pond proved very interesting.  Teeming with wildlife, we spotted newts, snails, tadpoles, water-boatmen, pond-skaters and bright blue dragonflies.  You had to be super fast on the shutter button to capture anything with more than 4 legs.

Round the back of the house, the River Piddle and a few scenic walks.

Definitely much more fun than painting doors!
