FLAGSTAFF

Entering red rock territory as we leave the wild-west looking cactus strewn plains of Phoenix to drive north to Flagstaff.  Already the terrain is changing again becoming rockier and redder the further we go.

Heading towards Sedona

Never ones to travel as the crow flies we pay a quick visit to Montezuma Castle, an ancient dwelling place built high into the cliff tops of the Verde Valley by the Southern Sinagua tribes.

Montezuma Castle National Monument

This incredible structure is a 5 storey house with around 20 rooms about 100 feet above the valley floor.

Life for the Sinagua farmers must have been very peaceful here.  Aside from tourists, the valley is quiet with only the sound of trickling water from the nearby river, birdsong and noisy crickets filling the air.   plains of Phoenix to drive north to Flagstaff.  Alre

It's very peaceful here in Verde Valley

Next stop Sedona, hiking capital of these parts.  Its red rock formations dominate the landscape.

View of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte

Taking a short mile hike round the Bell Rock trail to marvel at the incredible scenery.

Bell Rock

I’ve a million photos of red rocks!  Not allowed to pick any perfect or imperfect pebbles as it’s a federal offence.

Look out for tarantulas and snakes

It's like a red martian landscape

Anyone thinking of travelling up to Flagstaff should definitely consider taking the scenic route through Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon on the AZ-89 road.

Driving towards Oak Creek Canyon

You will not be disappointed on this route as round every curve there's another amazing view of the incredible rock formations.  It’s a very picturesque drive on a tree lined, winding road that climbs to the top of the mountain from Slide Rock State Park.  Well worth the detour.

Big toe test - brrr it's freezing!

Spending the night in the luxurious surroundings of the Hilton Garden Inn on the outskirts of Flagstaff .  So excited as tomorrow we finally arrive at the Grand Canyon!
