A thick fog has descended over Union Square this morning,
shrouding the skyline in a cloak of dirty grey.

Starting the day with a hearty breakfast at Mel’s Drive In,
one of those typical American diners that is all chrome and juke boxes. My breakfast is a ‘short stack with eggs’ and
a one-way ticket to an early grave - pancakes so thick you can use them as tea
trays and a small bucket of syrup to slather over everything. $35 for the pleasure and furred arteries.

Taking the Golden Gate ferry across the bay to Sausalito
($10.75 for a one way ride). Visibility
is pretty much zero leaving San Francisco but glorious sunshine arriving in
Sausalito. The weather is definitely bonkers
in these parts.

Sausalito

Sausalito is a quaint little town catering largely for day
trippers who fancy a boat ride and a large ice cream. We browsed all the grockle shops and relaxed
in a local bar enjoying the sunshine and pleasant atmosphere.
In contrast, the night trip to Alcatraz was full of sunset
scenes and brooding menace as night descended on ‘The Rock’.

I recommend the 6.30 pm trip if you are
visiting the prison as darkness gives the place a distinctly creepy
atmosphere. With our new super cameras,
we were able to capture some great shots of the place.

Creepy even more so with the empty cells
